December 19 - Major Dutch energy suppliers are raising prices for next year, with Eneco, Vattenfall and EnNatuurlijk nearly doubling heating prices. Eneco even went as high as €90 per gigajoule (GJ), the maximum price set by the Dutch Consumer and Markets Authority (ACM).
A large proportion of customers will not immediately notice a significant price increase because ACM caps prices for district heating. Up to 37 GJ, consumers pay a discount of around 47 euros per GJ.
District heating is more environmentally friendly because it is provided by heat released from, for example, power stations and waste treatment plants. It is estimated that half a million households in the Netherlands use this form of heating. They can't choose which energy company to buy heat from.
Vattenfall says the extra cost of about €30 a month for the average household with district heating is still much cheaper than connecting homes with hot weather. Eneco said customers were paying an average of 175 euros more a year than in 2022.
Energy companies say their costs of using gas and electricity to generate heat have risen and they must contend with high inflation. In addition, the temporary low value-added tax on energy will be abolished.
